Sterling filly expected to support record sales price
Magic Millions may be hogging the sales limelight over the next few weeks but there was also some interesting news from Karaka late last month.

According to the Cambridge Stud website Sir Patrick Hogan has decided to sell one of Cambridge Stud's crown jewels: the Zabeel-Diamond Lover filly (lot 363) at the January Karaka Yearling Sales.

"There will be a huge reserve on her and she will only be sold for a premium price. I'm not going to give such a valuable filly away," Sir Patrick said.

"This will be the last time a filly out of Diamond Lover is going up for sale. She's 22 years now and I will be keeping any other fillies that she produces," he said.

"There won't be a better bred filly go on the market anywhere in the world in 2005."

As a point of reference the last yearling offered for sale by Cambridge Stud from Diamond Lover was the AJC Derby winner Don Eduardo who fetched $3.6 million at the 2000 Karaka Yearling Sales and now stands at Fayette Park Stud in Cambridge.

Diamond Lover's other foals have included the dual Australian Group I winner Tristalove, the Group II winner Peruzzi and Listed winner Antwerp. She is in foal this year to Zabeel.

Tristalove is the dam of Group I Spring Champion Stakes winner Viking Ruler and Group II Moonee Valley Vase winner Kempinsky as well as black-type winner Diamond Like.

Diamond Lover is a Group I winning daughter of one of Australasia's all-time champion broodmares, Eight Carat who left five individual Group I winners. The others were Octagonal, Kaapstad, Marquise and Mouawad.

Cambridge's 'jewel' will be one of 76 yearlings offered for sale in Australasia this month including 50 in the Premier Sale at Karaka, nine in the Select Sale at Karaka (including five in the Phoenix Park draft) and 17 in the Magic Millions Sale on the Gold Coast.

For the pedigree buffs - other notable yearlings offered by Cambridge Stud in the coming weeks include:

Zabeel-Marquise colt: A brother to Group I Arrowfield Stud Stakes winner Shower Of Roses and a three-quarter brother in blood to Don Eduardo and Kaapstad.

Keeper-Our Tristalight filly: Dam completed the Group I Australasian-South Australian Oaks double and left the Group I winner and successful sire Danske. From the first yearling crop of Keeper.

Giant's Causeway-Champagne colt: Dam won twice at Group I level in Australia as well as being runner-up in the Melbourne Cup and has already left the black-type winner Martique.

Fusaichi Pegasus-Giovana filly: First foal of outstanding racemare who won four times at Group I level.

Stravinsky-Horlicks colt: A half-brother to Melbourne Cup winner Brew and Group II winner bubble. Dam won the Japan Cup.

Zabeel-Miss Power Bird filly: The dam is a half-sister to Hong Kong champion Lucky Owners. A three-quarter sister to Caulfield-Melbourne Cups winner Might And Power.
